Origin of Labor Day
In the 1880 s, as capitalism entered the monopoly stage, the ranks of the American proletariat grew rapidly, and a magnificent labor movement emerged. At that time, the American bourgeoisie in order to carry out capital accumulation, the cruel exploitation of the working class, they used various means to force workers to engage in up to 12-16 hours of labor a day. The broad masses of American workers gradually realized that in order to protect their rights, they must rise up and fight.
Beginning in 1884, the advanced workers' organizations in the United States passed a resolution to fight for the realization of "eight hours a day" and decided to launch a broad struggle for the implementation of the eight-hour work system on May 1, 1886. After the slogan of the eight-hour work system was put forward, it immediately received enthusiastic support and response from the working class of the United States. Thousands of workers in many cities participated in this struggle. The striking workers were subjected to a fishy crackdown by the American authorities, and many were killed and arrested.
On May 1, 1886, 350000 workers in Chicago and other cities in the United States held a general strike and demonstrations, demanding the implementation of an eight-hour work system and improved working conditions. The struggle shook the whole of the United States, the working class united to fight the powerful force, forcing the capital Mujia to accept the demands of the workers. The general strike of American workers has won.
In July 1889, the Second International, led by Engels, held a congress in Paris. In order to commemorate the "May Day" strike of American workers, it shows that "proletarians all over the world, unite!" The meeting passed a resolution stipulating that international workers should hold a parade on May 1, 1890, and decided to designate May 1 as International Labor Day. From then on, on this day, the working people of all countries in the world will rally and march to celebrate.
